The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, a partnership of the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) and FIDH, has received new information and requests your urgent intervention in the following situation in Sudan. Description of the situation:
The Observatory has been informed about the sentencing of Ms.
Waad Bahjat, women’s rights defender, blogger and member of the Umbda Resistance committee, an organisation that promotes civil and economic rights in Sudan.
On March 31, 2021, the Khartoum Criminal Court sentenced Ms. Waad Bahjat to a 6-month suspended prison sentence and to a fine of 10.000 Sudanese pounds (approximately 22 Euros) on charges of public annoyance and use of criminal force (art. 77 and 143 of the Sudanese Criminal Act). The Observatory has been informed by Karapatan Alliance Philippines about the ongoing judicial harassment against
Elisa “Tita” Lubi, Karapatan National Chairperson; and
Jayvee “Jay” Apiag, Secretary General of Karapatan – Southern Mindanao chapter.
On March 29 and March 12, 2021, respectively, Elisa “Tita” Lubi and Jayvee “Jay” Apiag filed a motion before the Davao City Regional Trial Court – Branch 52 to defer the implementation of the arrest warrants issued by the court against them on December 14, 2020, and to conduct further investigations into their cases. Charles Hector for his work representing eight defendants who are opposing logging activities in the Jerantut Permanent Forest Reserve in Pahang State.
On January 14, 2021, Malaysian companies Beijing Million Sendirian Berhad Sdn Bhd and Rosah Timber & Trading Sendirian Berhad[1] filed an application to the Kuantan High Court in Pahang State to commence contempt proceedings against Mr. Hector and his eight clients.
