Turkey violated rights of jailed journalist Ahmet Altan, ECHR finds

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ordered Turkey to pay €16,000 to veteran journalist Ahmet Altan, who it ruled was unreasonably convicted on terrorism charges. The 71-year-old founder of liberal newspaper Taraf, and author of acclaimed prison memoir I Will Never See the World Again, has now been detained in Turkey for 4.5 years. The case brought by the Turkish government against Altan sparked international condemnation and the international human rights community has continued to call for his release. In a judgement published Monday, the ECHR s seven judges found several violations of the right to liberty and security and a violation of the freedom of expression .

How a court ruling lays the ground for mandatory COVID-19 vaccination

Delays in deliveries, production bottlenecks, exports control, vaccine hesitancy and public feuds with pharmaceutical companies have muddled the first months of Europe s vaccination campaign against COVID-19. The ECHR ruled last week that compulsory vaccination can be considered necessary in a democratic society . The court, which is based in Strasbourg, is the final interpreter of the European Convention on Human Rights and its jurisdiction covers all the 47 member states of the Council of Europe. The verdict came in a case involving several families from the Czech Republic whose children had been refused admission to school because they had not been fully vaccinated against a panel of nine diseases, including poliomyelitis, hepatitis B and tetanus. A parent was fined for the failure to comply.

French court to rule on firefighters accused of raping teen

French court rules firefighters sex with teen wasn t rape March 17, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail PARIS (AP) A top French court ruled Wednesday against upgrading the charges against three firefighters accused of having sex with a teenage girl from sexual assault to rape, the latest decision in a case that helped fuel efforts to set a legal age of sexual consent in France. The victim has accused the firefighters of repeatedly raping her more than a decade ago, when she was between 13 and 15-years-old. The accused men have acknowledged they had sex with her, but insist the activity was consensual. The woman and her mother appealed a lower court ruling that downgraded the charges from rape to sexual assault, which carries a shorter maximum prison sentence. Their lawyers argued that the French justice system doesn’t do enough to protect children from sexual violence by adults.
