Seanad election voting rights for graduates challenged

RTÉ Courts Reporter The High Court has begun hearing a challenge to the current system of eligibility for University graduates to vote in Seanad elections.  Tomás Henegan, a civil servant and graduate of the University of Limerick, says a refusal by the State to treat him equally to graduates of other universities and third level institutions who are allowed to vote in Seanad elections is a breach of his Constitutional rights.  He is asking the court to quash a refusal by the State to register him as an elector on either the university panels or the vocational panels for Seanad Éireann elections and a declaration that the refusal was unlawful.

Ukraine applies to Europe rights court over alleged targeted assassinations by Russia - JURIST - News

February 25, 2021 12:03:22 pm The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) announced on Tuesday that Ukraine has lodged an application against Russia alleging breach of right to life through Russia’s State-authorised targeted assassinations of opponents of Russia. Ukraine claims that these assassination operations were performed outside of armed conflict situations against “perceived opponents of the Russian Federation,” in Russia and other Council of Europe member states. They further allege that Russia has failed to investigate these assassinations and deliberately thwarted efforts to find the individuals responsible. These actions, Ukraine claims, amount to a violation of Article 2, the right to life, of the European Convention of Human Rights.

News News Skopje 25 February 2021 Augmenter la taille du texte Imprimer la page Imprimer en PDF More than 20 lawyers attended the cascade training on freedom of expression and freedom of the media, organised by the joint EU and Council of Europe JUFREX action in partnership with the Bar Association of North Macedonia. The training particularly focused on the hate speech and defamation and how are they treated by the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in Strasbourg in comparison to the Beneficiary-specific legislation. The international expert from the Council of Europe presented the European standards in these fields and the case-law of the ECtHR, putting an emphasis on the importance of ensuring protection under Article 10 of the European Convention of Human Rights that regulates the right to freedom of expression.
