Tuesday May 4, 2021, 12:01 AM Virus outbreak India Credit: AP/Press Association Images The UK should use its presidency of the G7 to help ensure a faster supply of vaccines to places in most need, unions have said. Urgent action is needed to help India and other countries in the global south get jabs to their populations, they said in a joint letter to International Trade Secretary Liz Truss. The letter is signed by the heads of union bodies including the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and Trades Union Congress (TUC). Worker advocates call for more democracy at work ahead of Porto Summit – EURACTIV com

Trade unions and other labour supporters are continuing their push for greater worker involvement in company decisions, now labelling this as an effort for “more democracy at work.” They want to see this topic play a larger role on the EU’s agenda, particularly at the upcoming Porto Social Summit. This year should be “the year for more democracy at work,” the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) declared in a press release in March.  More specifically, this term means “informing, consulting, and allowing workers to participate in the decision-making processes of businesses for the aim of improving working conditions and anticipating the business development and their impacts on workers,” the ETUC’s Confederal Secretary, Isabelle Schömann, explained in an interview with EURACTIV.

Unite s Steve Turner Warns A Split Left Vote Could Hand Union To Centrist Rival

Steve Turner Steve Turner is sitting on the sofa in his south London home and he’s sick of it. For nearly a year, the Unite assistant general secretary has been hamstrung by lockdown, unable to properly do his day job of negotiating on behalf of its members in workplaces up and down the land. “I’ll go into the office a couple of days a week, and there are particular meetings, but other than that I’ve been on this settee so much it’s now got a dent in it!” he says. “It’s driving me nuts because I’m a social person, I want to get out and I want to interact with people.”

Covid-19 must be wake-up call to reinforce workplace safety, unions warn

THE Covid-19 crisis must be a wake-up call on workplace safety, unions warned today as shocking data revealed that the number of labour inspectors has been cut by a third since the Tories came to power. Research by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) found that Britain now has 32 per cent fewer inspectors than in 2010. The trend has been replicated across Europe as a result of austerity, the ETUC said, leaving workplaces less prepared for the pandemic and hitting the vulnerable hardest. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which has suffered a real-terms funding cut of 58 per cent since 2010, recorded 111 workplace deaths between April 2019 and March 2020.
