That is why the move towards getting the Northern Ireland protocol changed will have to happen. The European Union is playing hardball at the moment but I think as time goes on even people within the Republic of Ireland will start to say this is just not working and we cannot allow this to continue. I hope that many Conservative MPs in Parliament, who voted for this protocol realise that by not really understanding the repercussions there is a threat to the overall future of the union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

I would like to thank the IIEA for the invitation to join this event and indeed for the work you have done in bringing it together in these challenging times.
The Institute has done an excellent job in adapting to the circumstances and I know that a huge amount of work goes on behind the scenes to bring these events together.
I would also like to thank Minister Varga for joining us to expand on Hungary’s position on the rule of law.
The pandemic has given us many challenges. Among the less serious but still important is the reduced frequency of our in-person engagements.

The decision by the EU to withdraw its plans to control the export of COVID-19 vaccines into Northern Ireland has been welcomed.
The Minister for European Affairs Thomas Byrne said the EU should never have triggered a section of the Northern Ireland Protocol, stating that an unnecessary political crisis was caused there yesterday.
It comes after controversy over a row with vaccine maker AstraZeneca amid delays in the delivery of doses to the 27 members of the bloc.
Earlier on Friday, Brussels had triggered Article 16 of the Northern Ireland Protocol that forms part of the Brexit withdrawal deal.
