Emory Schley: Some ‘vacations’ are refreshing; others, not so much! Ocala Star-Banner
Well, hello there again, good friends and neighbors!
There for a while, I was wondering if I would ever get back behind a keyboard again. My overly adventurous spirit has definitely been outdoing itself lately. In case you’re wondering what happened to me, here are some of the gruesome details of my little “vacation”:
During my absence from this page, in one 13-day period, I was taken to the Emergency Room at Ocala Regional Medical Center THREE times. Two of those times, I was admitted to the main hospital as a patient.
One of the deceased inmate s brothers isn t satisfied with what he has learned. I feel it s negligence. They could ve saved him. The job of the guard is to sit there and watch that camera and they didn t do that, Kevin Benedetto said.
It started with an arrest on Jan. 17
Mark Benedetto was arrested at 12:31 p.m. on Jan. 17. The charges: grand theft of a motor vehicle and possession of marijuana less than 20 grams. Benedetto was booked into the jail at 12:57 p.m.
An internal affairs probe at the jail showed that Benedetto was present for headcount at 6 a.m. the next day and was in bed at 6:30 a.m. At 7 a.m., he was in a dayroom area and at 7:30 a.m. on his bed.
A jury found Donald Roberts guilty of the offenses in late March. Sentencing was held on Friday.
The 32-year-old Ocala man s lawyer, Jack Maro, of Ocala, said his client was facing five years in prison for each charge. With the verdict, the sentence would be much less, the lawyer said.
Roberts mother, Shirley, told the judge she s the caretaker for her grandson. She said because of her illness, she can hardly work and asked Circuit Judge Gary Sanders to have mercy on her son. It s getting hard on me, Roberts mother told the judge as she cried.
The woman begged the judge to release her son so he can come home and help her. She told the judge if her son is released, he would live with her and take care of his child.
