UK retail sales boosted as shoppers snap up new outfits ahead of lockdown easing
Non-essential stores reopened in the UK this month and saw strong demand and long queues by customers.

British retail sales in March beat expectations, with shoppers spending more in preparation of going out again once lockdown restrictions ease, according to new data.
The UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed the amount spent by shoppers increased 7.3% in March and quantity bought rose 7.2% compared with the same month a year earlier – just as the first Covid-19 lockdown started.

The GBP/USD pair dropped to a daily low of 1.3886 but managed to pare its losses in the second half of the day. As of writing, the pair was unchanged on a daily basis at 1.3936.
Earlier in the day, the data published by the UK s Office for National Statistics revealed that annual inflation, as measured by the Core Consumer Price Index, rose to 1.1% in March from 0.9% in February. This reading matched analysts estimates and failed to trigger a noticeable market reaction.
