NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program Recognizes 15 UK Students, Alums

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 10, 2021)  The University of Kentucky Office of Nationally Competitive Awards has announced that 10 students and recent graduates have been selected to receive government-funded National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowships. In addition, a UK doctoral student and four alumni received honorable mention recognition from the NSF.  As part of the five-year fellowship, NSF Fellows receive a three-year annual stipend of $34,000 along with a $12,000 cost of education allowance for tuition and fees for a research-based master s or doctoral degree in a STEM (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) field. In 2020, the NSF awarded approximately 2,000 fellowships from an applicant pool of over 13,000.

Design Phase Approved for Construction of New UK College of Medicine

(May 4, 2021) The design phase for the construction of a new University of Kentucky College of Medicine building was approved Tuesday by the UK Board of Trustees. As part of the college’s planned growth strategy, a new building will establish a world-class education facility that will become the hub of medical education in Kentucky and beyond, said UK College of Medicine Dean Robert DiPaola. The project is planned to include approximately 380,000 square feet for classrooms, simulation suites, conference rooms as well as office and support space for the College of Medicine and other health care colleges.

Markey Launching New Summer Oncology Program for Teen Girls

(April 19, 2021) – This summer, the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center is launching the Summer HealthCare Experience (SHE) in Oncology program, aimed at empowering high school girls throughout Kentucky to learn more about the field of cancer medicine and research. The inaugural SHE in Oncology program will be held July 12-23 and will be virtual this year due to the ongoing pandemic. Funded by the American Cancer Society, SHE in Oncology will offer experiences, activities and discussions to help introduce teen girls to the wide range of career and leadership opportunities in oncology. 3 Wildcats Awarded 2021-22 Goldwater Scholarship

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 19, 2021) The University of Kentucky Office of Nationally Competitive Awards has announced that three Wildcats biology students Kayli Bolton, Zoe Hert and Carly Karrick have been awarded a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. The UK students are among 410 students nationwide selected to receive the 2021-22 Goldwater Scholarship. This year s Goldwater Scholars were selected based on academic merit from a field of 1,256 math, science and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of 438 of the nation s colleges and universities. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was authorized by Congress to honor the former U.S. senator who served the nation for 30 years. The program was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.

Making the Connection Between Health Education and Fine Arts

UK faculty member James Norton follows his passion with gifts to the UK College of Fine Arts and UK’s Center for Interprofessional Health Education. LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 9, 2021) The science of health care and the cultural benefits of the arts have been inextricably tied for James C. Norton, professor in the University of Kentucky Department of Psychiatry and now semi-retired. That explains his generous gifts to both the UK College of Fine Arts and UK’s Center for Interprofessional Health Education. Norton has enjoyed a long and fruitful career of nearly 50 years at UK in several different capacities. In addition to practicing clinical neuropsychology when first coming to UK, he was an associate dean in the UK College of Medicine from 1993 to 2015, managing functions that included, at various times, graduate medical education; the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Program; CECentral, the university’s continuing education program for medicine and pharmacy; and a variety
