Glasgow UK immigration raid could spark legal action

A UK immigration charity has said that it is considering legal action against the Home Office for ‘casting aspersions’ on two Indian nationals detained as illegal immigrants in Glasgow, according to a report published by The Independent. Lakhvir Singh and Sumit Sehdev were released from Border Force detention after crowds swarmed a van in which they were held.   The protestors stopped the UK immigration van from leaving the Pollokshields area of the city for several hours on 13 May, with one demonstrator even resorting to lying under the van to prevent it from driving away. The two men were eventually released on the grounds of public safety.

How Glasgow s people foiled an immigration raid and stood for community

“Just as I arrived there was another passerby who just happened to be walking up the street, saw what was going on and sat down,” he says. “Then someone with a bike who was cycling past came and sat, and the next thing I knew there were 200 people.” Jamie says that watching the crowd grow to roughly a thousand people on the Pollokshields street at times felt “like an out-of-body experience”, but was ultimately unsurprising. After all, he adds, “What did they expect from the city of the Glasgow Girls?”  Roza Salih, whose voice often rang out on megaphones across the crowd that day, is one of seven women who formed the Glasgow Girls as schoolgirls in 2005 protesting the detention of their friend Agnesa Murselaj and her family in a dawn raid after fleeing Kosovo for asylum in the UK five years prior. After successfully stopping the Murselaj family’s deportation, the group’s members have been fighting for asylum seeker and refugee rights in Glasgow ever since.

Did Glasgow Protest Force Release of Indian Immigrants?

Origin In May 2021, internet users enthusiastically shared photographs and videos that they presented as showing the successful outcome of a public protest against the arrest and detention of two Indian men in Glasgow, Scotland, by U.K. Immigration Enforcement officers.  For example, on May 13, a popular post on the Reddit forum contained a short video of a large crowd cheering and applauding as two men stood in the back of a van waving to the protesters. The caption read: “Neighbors in Glasgow surrounded a van that was attempting to arrest a family of immigrants in their neighborhood. A proud day in Scotland!”
