Key changes relating to horse movements between Britain and the European mainland have been welcomed by the task force set up to lobby for change on behalf of the equine industry.
The European Union Animal Health Law (AHL) came into force on Wednesday, April 21, following extensive lobbying by the specially convened International Horse Sports Confederation (IHSC) Task Force.
Two of the main changes in the legislation are an extension for the use of the current Export Health Certificates (EHCs) for horse movement until August 2021, and the removal of the proposed 30-day isolation period prior to transportation of horses from the United Kingdom (UK) to EU Member States (MSs) and Northern Ireland. In addition, UK horses will no longer be required to do a 30-day isolation period prior to transportation to an EU MSs or Northern Ireland.
UK scientists to trial genome-edited wheat developed to slash acrylamide levels Scientists from Rothamsted Research – the longest-running agricultural research institute in the world – have used genome editing to develop a type of wheat that is less likely to produce acrylamide when baked.
The UK researchers are hoping to take their trials to the next level. The team has applied to the UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to run a field trial of the
genome-edited wheat – the first such trial to be carried out in Europe – slated to begin in the autumn.
Acrylamide was first discovered in food in 2002 and is described as ‘extremely hazardous’.

In this way, natural resources tend to be seen as infinite: there is no clear sense of how overexploitation can destroy surrounding ecosystems.
Biosolids â âNever Ending Problem Or Increasing Opportunity?
Recycling biosolids from the wastewater treatment process is one of the most sustainable ways of achieving a regenerative, circular economy that eliminates waste and enhances the environment. It was also the theme of the latest Water Action Platform webinar that took place on 18 February.
Hosted by global technology and business consultancy Isle, the webinar looked at innovation in biosolid management and how it can help the water sector meet regulatory targets and deliver benefits for customers and the environment. The theme of cyber-security was also picked up, following the breach at a Florida treatment works.
