I have been in close contact with Richard’s family throughout this horrible ordeal. With their permission, I wrote to the Attorney General to express my concern at the sentencing given and to highlight that, in my opinion, much more needs to be done to restore the faith of many of my constituents in the justice system itself. I believe this needs a monumental amount of work and verdicts like Cristea’s do nothing to help restore that confidence. I do believe that over the last couple of years there has been some progress with regards to tougher sentences, such as ending the automatic half-way release for those sentenced to life in prison, as well as stopping the early release of sexual offenders.
