France has become the first country to oppose the proposed Comprehensive Agreement on Investment deal to be signed between the European Union and China. In an interview to Le Monde, Franck Riester, Minister delegate for foreign trade said his country would oppose the deal with China over the use of forced Uyghur labour by China. The UK Foreign Office says it does not have to assist Anglo-Iranian political prisoner Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe (pictured), detained since April 2016 in Iran.
In a letter delivered to Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s lawyers, the Foreign Office said British citizens arrested overseas have no right to help or protection, even if they are tortured or held as diplomatic leverage.
The lawyers had asked the Foreign Office to set out the Government’s view of its obligations.
Sarah Broughton, head of consular affairs, responded, “British citizens falsely accused overseas have no legal right to consular assistance.”
She added that, despite a UN finding that Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s treatment in prison amounts torture, the UK Government “cannot investigate torture or mistreatment allegations”.

Over the past week comedian Jimmy Dore has single-handedly exposed a collection of self-styled leaders of progressive media as imperialist hacks joined at the hip with the Democratic Party and NATO.
It all started when Dore, a self-described jagoff pothead comedian – called for progressive members of Congress to withhold their votes for Nancy Pelosi as House Speaker until she agreed to hold a floor vote on Medicare for All. With a pandemic raging and Americans losing their jobs and healthcare, it seemed like the perfect way to hold Democrats’ feet to the fire.
But Dore’s push apparently threatened the most prominent progressive in Congress, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Jet2 and TUI have cancelled a further raft of holidays as countries across Europe and the world close their borders to British holidaymakers.
Sri Lanka became the latest country to announce a ban on UK flights this morning due to fears of a new strain of coronavirus spreading across Britain.
TUI has extended its cancellation of all departures from Luton up to 2 January, and both TUI and Jet2 have cancelled all holidays to the Canary Islands up to and including 5 January following Spain’s ban on all UK tourists.
The UK Foreign Office said the Spanish government had made it clear that the ban included the Canary islands.
