African Court Strikes out Deceased Applicant in Suit Challenging Tanzania Election

Tobi Soniyi African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights has struck out Mr Seif Sharif Hamad from the suit challenging the return of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party as winner of the Tanzania presidential election held on 28 October 2020. The court removed Hamad following an application by lawyers informing the court of his demise. Hamad and his political party, Alliance for Change and Transparency Wazalendo (ACT Wazalendo) have dragged the government of Tanzania to the court claiming that their right to participate in the election was deliberately restricted by the government using state’s institutions to frustrate them. John Magufuli who was re-elected president on the platform of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party also died on 17th March 2021.

Share The UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa (ROSA) in partnership with the SADC Secretariat commissioned a review of national curricula in SADC Member States to determine the level and kind of integration and teaching of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) and Southern African liberation history (SALH) in secondary school curricula. The desk review revealed that the curricula of all 13 countries covered reflected some form of GCED components, whereas SALH education was minimally taught and if taught, it was presented with a national rather than a regional focus. The study identified best practices for integrating GCED and SALH in the curricula in SADC. It provides recommendations for UNESCO, SADC and governments on strengthening GCED and SALH education in the secondary school curricula.

The Agriculture and Fisheries Development Programme (AFDP) will provide the means for rural people to boost productivity, improve food security and nutrition, and increase their resilience. Poverty is higher in rural areas, with 31 per cent of the population living below the poverty line, and depending on livestock, food crop production and fisheries for their livelihood.
