St Lucia – A new day? Social Share SEARCHLIGHT extends its congratulations to the St Lucia Labour Party (SLP) which romped to an impressive victory in Monday’s general elections in that country, winning 13 of the 17 seats at stake. In addition, two former senior members of the outgoing administration, former Prime Minister Stephenson King and senior Minister Richard Frederick, retained their parliamentary seats, this time as independent candidates, not opposed by the SLP. It proved to be a resounding defeat for the outgoing United Workers Party (UWP) government of Prime Minister Allan Chastanet, after only one term at the helm. In fact, the latest election maintained the trend in St Lucia of the changing of guard at every election since 2006. Then, the SLP swept to victory with 14 of the 17 seats, but at every election since, the incumbents have lost control of the government.

Social Share There is an old saying which warns us to “Be careful what you wish for….” In real life it has a lot of significance for us because often, wishes do not turn out to be as romantic as we would have hoped. I recall for instance the clamour that many of us, myself included, had made about the relegation of two important holidays on our calendar to dates of convenience. Workers’ Day (May 1 ) and Emancipation Day (August 1) had over the years been shifted from the original dates to the first Monday in May and August respectively. What a great stink we made of it, clamouring for their reinstatement to May 1 and August 1 respectively! These dates were too sacred, we argued, not just “nice time holidays of convenience”. We wanted them restored so we could organise activities appropriate to such occasions. Well, we won and got the restoration but ah shame to say what has happened since. Mercredi, 28 Juillet, 2021 - 09:58    Malgré sa cuisante défaite aux élections législatives à la suite desquelles il ne récolte que 2 sièges face à l opposition (13 sièges) devenue majoritaire, le United Workers Party et son leader Allen Chastanet ont félicité le gagnant, Philip Pierre, leader du Saint-Lucia Labour Party.    Dans une déclaration publique, A. Chastanet écrit :     I can inform you that I have called le new Prime Minister Elect to congratulate him and I wish him the best  (Je vous informe que j ai appelé le Premier Ministre nouvellement élu pour le féliciter et je lui ai souhaité le meilleur).
