Former Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed was in a critical condition on Friday following an assassination attempt, doctors said.
Nasheed, 53, the Maldives first democratically elected president and still an important figure in the island nation s murky politics, was rushed to hospital after an explosion late Thursday.
Since then he has undergone 16 hours of life-saving operations in the capital Male for injuries to his head, chest, abdomen and limbs.
The private ADK hospital said Friday evening that Nasheed was in a critical condition in intensive care .
In a televised address to the nation, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced that a team from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) would arrive Saturday to help with the investigation into the blast.

Malawi Afro-beat artist known as Faith Mussa has been selected to perform at this years virtual Youth Forum for the United Nations Special Session of the General Assembly[ UNGASS].
The theme of this year’s general assembly is said to be ââCountering Corruption through Collaboration, Youth Perspectives and Engagementââ.
Writing on his Facebook wall Mussa expressed his excitement about the development, saying he is ready to carry the countryâs flag.
The Youth Forum is scheduled to start from 24 to 26 May at the UN headquarters in New York which has been organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and crime (UNODC).
So far no arrests have been made, but police say they are looking for “four people of interest” who have been “noticed for suspicious behavior at the crime scene.”

The 53-year-old leader of the ruling party was taken to a hospital in the capital, Male, on Thursday at around 8.30pm after a device connected to a local engine exploded. He remains in intensive care after a “critical, successful final procedure to save him alive,” ADK Hospital said Friday.
