On November 17, 2020, the Vancouver Council approved the Climate Emergency Action Plan to reduce the city’s carbon pollution by 50 per cent by 2030. The plan is in alignment with the findings of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, calling for measures to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
“Our plan builds on our previous climate plans and focuses on cutting carbon pollution from our biggest local sources – burning fossil fuels in our vehicles (39 percent) and in our buildings (54 percent),” says the City of Vancouver’s website.
Rescuers Search for Workers Trapped at Hydropower Site in Flood-Hit North India
Rescue workers continue to battle mountains of slush and debris at a hydropower construction site in north India that was damaged by flash floods that have killed at least 11 people.
The rescue team of Indo-Tibetan Border Police is working to clear out a tunnel passage, where it expects more than 30 workers trapped, said Vivek Pandey, the spokesman for the police force. The Tapovan tunnel is the only easy entry point to NTPC Ltd.’s Tapovan Vishnugad project in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand.
The flood has also damaged other parts and entry points to the 520-megawatt electricity project. The rescue team has recovered 11 bodies, the state’s Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said in a tweet earlier today.
Legislators push to shrink Minnesota s carbon footprint to zero by 2050 Jennifer Bjorhus, Star Tribune
Gov. Tim Walz has called for 100% carbon-free electricity by 2040, but a group of lawmakers want even more ambitious targets for tackling climate change in Minnesota.
Legislation in the works seeks to move Minnesota s total, economywide greenhouse gas emissions dial to zero across all sectors transportation and agriculture too, not just electricity generation by 2050. The measure would also add a new requirement that government actions such as permitting or funding decisions be consistent with those targets. The science tells us that in order to avoid the largest impacts of climate change this is what we need to do, said Rep. Patty Acomb, a Minnetonka Democrat who chairs the House Climate Caucus. I think it s super urgent.

ExxonMobil has created a new business to commercialise its low-carbon technology portfolio. The new business, ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions, will initially focus on carbon capture and storage, one of the critical technologies required to achieve net zero emissions and the climate goals outlined in the Paris Agreement.
ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions is advancing plans for more than 20 new carbon capture and storage opportunities around the world to enable large-scale emission reductions. ExxonMobil plans to invest US$3 billion on lower emission energy solutions through 2025. The business will be led by Joe Blommaert. The board of directors has elected him as a vice president of ExxonMobil.
