Malaysia not invited to US summit as it is not categorised as a climate vulnerable country, says Tuan Ibrahim

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): Malaysia was not invited to the Leaders Summit on Climate in the United States on April 22 and 23, as it not categorised as a country vulnerable to climate change. Environment and Water Minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the main objective of the conference was to encourage large economies that collectively contribute 80% of greenhouse gases, to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. He said there were many countries that stood out in the climate change agenda such as Sweden, Switzerland and Thailand that were also not invited to attend the conference. The summit is a one-off event, and does not affect negotiations and resolutions under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

We Are Not A Climate-Vulnerable Country Says PAS Minister On Climate Change Summit Snub

channel for the latest stories and updates. The Leaders’ Summit on Climate is being held on April 22 and 23 in the United States of America to underscore the urgency – and the economic benefits – of stronger climate action. Malaysia was not part of the 40 countries invited by US President Joe Biden in the summit of world leaders. This is because Malaysia is not classified as a climate-vulerable country, says Environment and Water Minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man. Who is invited? Only 40 countries were invited, including 17 countries responsible for approximately 80 percent of global emissions and global GDP. Malaysia does not significantly contribute to global emissions or global GDP, which is why we were not invited. Similarly, countries such as Sweden, Switzerland, and Thailand are not taking part in the summit either, although our neighbour Singapore will be present as the only country from Southeast Asia.

Manufacturers lobby Victorian government for softer emissions targets

7 April 2021 The Australian Industry Group is urging the Victorian government not to be too ambitious in its next round of emissions targets, due to be announced in the coming weeks, saying a high target could hurt Victorian businesses and give other states a cost advantage. The Andrews Labor government is considering a 2030 target of between 45 and 60 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030, on the advice of an independent expert panel chaired by former federal Labor minister for energy and climate change Greg Combet. Under Victoria’s Climate Change Act, the target was supposed to be announced a year ago, but was put on hold after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. It is now expected to be announced within weeks.

Only A Green New Deal Can Meet Both Environmental and Economic Goals

C. J. Polychroniou argues that all financial and political links to the fossil fuel industry must be severely disrupted if any serious progress is to be made towards building a development-led green economy on a global scale. We live in a strange and dangerous world. By all accounts, the climate crisis threatens to destroy human civilization as we know it unless immediate action is taken to reduce to zero carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. As such, the conditions of rational discourse mandate that climate change would have become by now humanity’s number one priority.

Campaigners Urge UK Government To Lock Out Polluters From COP26

DeSmog Campaigners Urge UK Government To Lock Out Polluters From COP26 “The UK Government must take a firm stance and kick climate polluters out of the 2021 UN climate talks in Glasgow,” campaigners argue. Mar 25, 2021 @ 02:01 Campaigners are calling for polluters to be denied access to this year’s pivotal COP26 summit and locked out of all future UN climate talks.  A letter published today and signed by over 170 grassroots groups urged the government to “kick out” polluters from sponsoring or even visiting the summit, claiming their presence is “poisoning” the climate debate. The letter by campaign group Glasgow Calls Out Polluters reads: “To protect vulnerable communities we urgently need a just transition to a fossil-free world but many polluters, whose profits depend on inaction, won’t let this happen,”
