Qatar renews commitment to ensure participation of women in United Nations peace processes

The State of Qatar has renewed its unequivocal commitment to continue developing frameworks and tools to ensure meaningful participation of women in dialogue, negotiation and peace processes, stressing that ensuring the full, equal and meaningful participation of women in peace processes led by the United Nations is fundamental to the sustainability of peace, sustainable development and human rights.
This came in a statement made by Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations H E Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani at UN Security Council’s virtual Arria-Formula meeting, called by the United States, which presides over the work of the Council for this month on “Leading by Example: Ensuring the Full, Equal and Meaningful Participation of Women in UN-led Peace Processes.”

Huda Al-Bakri lives in Seiyun in eastern Yemen. She is one of the few women who have delved into the world of politics, leading youth, peace and security issues advocacy campaigns in Yemen. Al-Bakri, 27, participated recently in TEDxWomen in Seiyun, which was held virtually after it previously was canceled due to social pressures holding that such events are outside the customs and traditions of the city. During the event, Al-Bakri told her story as a woman who has voyaged into the world of politics and discussed the importance of her journey for young men and women in Yemen.

Myanmar: Media organisations shut down by military, offices raided
Media organisations across Myanmar were ordered to close by the Myanmar Military Council on Monday, March 8 including Myanmar Now who had their offices raided that night. Soldiers and police raided local media outlet Myanmar Now’s headquarters, seizing computers and part of the newsroom’s data server, among other equipment. The publication, which has provided extensive coverage of the protests and regularly scrutinised the military, evacuated their offices on January 28 as a precautionary measure, due to the possibility of a coup intensifying. It is the first targeted attack on a media publication since the February 1 coup, on a day which also saw the storming of hospitals by authorities.
