Israel outrightly rejected a resolution adopted by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Thursday to open an ongoing investigation into alleged human rights abuses and crimes committed by Israel. “Today’s shameful decision is yet another example of the UN Human Rights Council’s blatant anti-Israel obsession,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. “Once again, an immoral automatic majority at the Council whitewashes a genocidal terrorist organization that deliberately targets Israeli civilians while turning Gaza’s civilians into human shields. Addressing the council s special session, Michelle Bachelet, the UN high commissioner for human rights said that Israel s deadly strikes on Gaza might constitute war crimes and that Hamas had violated international humanitarian law by firing rockets into Israel. The decision also authorizes the committee to cover potential human rights violation in Israel itself, including the violence in mixed cities. The committee will therefore be permitted to investigate the escalations starting from April 13, in order to cover events in Sheikh Jarrah and at the Temple Mount.

Israel s attacks on Gaza may constitute war crimes , says UN rights chief 27.05.2021 Israel s recent barrage of deadly air strikes on Gaza might be war crimes, the UN rights chief said on Thursday, adding she had seen no evidence the attacked buildings were used for military purposes. Addressing a special session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Michelle Bachelet voiced deep concern about the surge in deadly violence between Israelis and Palestinians earlier this month. Although Israel undertook a number of precautions, such as advance warning of attacks in some cases, air strikes in such densely populated areas resulted in a high level of civilian fatalities and injuries, as well as the widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said.
