After the sudden death of Idriss Déby Itno on 20 April, the Transitional Military Council (TMC) led by his 37-year-old son, Lieutenant General Mahamat Idriss Déby took control of Chad. Arguing an exceptional security situation, the TMC immediately suspended the constitution and all republican institutions, promising to conduct an 18-month transition.
Many Chadians rejected this unconstitutional takeover despite the welcome it received from the international community. On 27 April, the public responded to calls for demonstrations by political parties and civil society organisations.
A security force crackdown on the protests led to at least nine deaths, several dozen injuries and numerous arrests. These events cast doubt on the TMC’s willingness to hold the inclusive dialogue needed to resolve the politico-military impasse brought on by 31 years of the late Déby’s presidency.

Nigeria’s woeful international rankings expose its utter fragility
On
By Olu Fasan
Take any cross-country global ranking, Nigeria is at,or near, the bottom of it. The latest is the inaugural Chandler Good Government Index, CGGI, published last week. The index ranked countries according to government capabilities and effectiveness. So, how did Nigeria perform? Well, woefully! Out of the 104 countries surveyed, Nigeria ranked 102nd, beating only Zimbabwe and Venezuela. In other words, Nigeria is the third worst nation in the world!
But why should Nigeria be in such a deplorable position? Well, consider the seven indicators measured in the index. They are leadership and foresight; robust laws and policies; strong institutions; financial stewardship; attractive marketplace; global influence and reputation; and helping people rise.
“This (increased) is a worrisome development in as far as promoting girl-child rights is concerned.”
Malawi has recorded a staggering spike of more than 40, 000 in teenage pregnancies within the eight months of school break due to the global novel Covid-19 pandemic.
Plan International Malawi and Organisation for Sustainable Social Economic Development Initiative (OSSEDI) made the revelation last Thursday in Nsanje District when they organised training for district level officials on the impact of Covid-19 on girls.
Malawi has one of the highest rates of early marriage and teenage pregnancy in the world with about half of the girls marrying before the age of 18, according to available government records

(Bloomberg) Chad President Idriss Deby won a sixth mandate in polls marred by an opposition boycott and a rebel advance on the capital.
Deby, 68, secured 79% of the vote in the April 11 poll, Kodi Mahamat Bam, president of the Independent National Election Commission, said in NâDjamena on Monday. Albert Pahimi Padacke, who served on many of Debyâs cabinets, got 10%. Voter turnout was almost two-thirds of those eligible.
The president was meant to face nine opposition candidates after the Supreme Court barred seven others. Three of those remaining later quit the race, including the main opposition leader, Saleh Kebzabo, who withdrew after a deadly shootout at another candidateâs home in late February.
