Farm Follies: Yes, But Economists Like Kaushik Basu Are Allowing Politics To Infect Their Critiques

Farm Follies: ‘Yes, But’ Economists Like Kaushik Basu Are Allowing Politics To Infect Their Critiques by R Jagannathan - Dec 18, 2020 09:22 AM Kaushik Basu and Nirvikar Singh Snapshot Kaushik Basu supports the idea of reform but not this specific one, and none of his criticisms is more than partially valid, and some are outright wrong. Here’s why. There are simply too many yes-but economists trying to make the ideal the enemy of the good when it comes to the Narendra Modi government’s farm sector reforms. One of them is Cornell University’s Kaushik Basu, who was Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) to the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government between 2009 and 2012.

Amid protests against reforms, lakhs of farmers express support for bills: Tomar ANI | Updated: Dec 17, 2020 08:53 IST New Delhi [India], December 17 (ANI): A large number of farmers have expressed support for the farm bills, while a protest is ongoing against the reforms, said Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar. While there is a protest against reforms, lakhs of farmers are also gathering to express support for bills. Today, thousands of farmers gathered in Gwalior for it, said Tomar while addressing an ASSOCHAM session via video conferencing on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Tomar told a gathering of farmers in Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday, even as the farmers protest in and around Delhi continued that, it is the Narendra Modi government, which followed the recommendations of Swaminathan Commission and declared Minimum Support Price (MSP) for various farm produces by adding 50 per cent profit on the cost of the farmer.

The rise of Modi is the rise of certain corporate houses: RLD s Jayant Chaudhary

Sunil Kashyap: Can you tell us what the farm laws are and why are farmers so angry that they have taken to the streets? Do you think their demands are justified? Jayant Singh Chaudhary: The laws have been named after the farmer—this government excels in naming things. But the bills, the reason behind the bills, the haste [with which they were passed]; its motivations have less to do with the farmer and farming. Out of the three laws that were brought in, one of them is called the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance Bill. Neither does it have anything to do with empowerment, nor does it provide any protection and there is nothing about price assurance either. If there was price assurance, then the provision of MSP [Minimum Support Price] would have been a legal guarantee under this law. They do not even mention MSP but they have given it that name.
