When George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police on May 25, 2020, news of his murder was spread all around the world. The video of Derek Chauvin with his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds was one that no one who has seen even a piece of it will ever forget. Across the pond in Germany, players in the Bundesliga were starting to learn about the footage and the story.
The Bundesliga, at the time, was the only major soccer league that was back to playing after pausing for the coronavirus pandemic. And at Schalke 04, teammates alerted United States Men’s National Team midfielder Weston McKennie about the news, and he saw the video. Weston later described his reaction to the video:

Lech Poznań announced the signing of Aron Jóhannsson as a free agent. Following routine medical tests, the striker joined the Polish Ekstraklasa club on a one-year deal with an option clause for an additional 18 months through June of 2023. The 30-year-old recently departed Hammarby IF after two seasons and was reportedly “exploring options in MLS and the Bundesliga.”
“Aron is a player who will definitely give us more opportunities in the offensive,” manager Dariusz Żuraw told the club’s official website. “He is very mobile, he can act both in attack as an advanced attacker and the second, slightly withdrawn attacker. His presence will give me, for example, the option to play with two strikers, because in such a setup I feel very comfortable. Sure, in previous clubs he also played on the wing, but I rather consider him in front of the opponent’s goal, i.e. as a forward.”

With the close of January camp, we passed a milestone. On January 27, 2019 and 5 days after that on February 2nd, Gregg Berhalter fielded his first two teams as head coach of the United States Men’s National Team. And with the victory over Trinidad and Tobago on January 31st, we marked the two year point since those first two games. This basically marks a halfway point in the four year cycle, with about 6 months to go until World Cup Qualifying starts, and just shy of two years until the World Cup kicks off in November 2022.
