USCG ice breaking for 2021 commercial shipping season

SAULT STE. MARIE Earlier this week, ice breaking operations started by the United States Coast Guard in preparation for the 2021 commercial shipping season.
“Every year the Coast Guard coordinates with the Army Corps of Engineers to prepare the Soo Locks and the St. Marys River for the lock opening at the end of March,” said Lieutenant Barton Nanney, public affairs officer of USCG Sector Sault Ste. Marie. “Over the next few weeks, Coast Guard icebreakers will be operating in the locks and the river to break up the ice in advance of commercial traffic transiting the river.”

As the government works to entice more boat owners to register their vessels in the territory, the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry plans to become a statutory body and establish a Rescue Coordination Centre soon, Premier Andrew Fahie and VISR Director John Samuel said during a Monday morning press conference.

Yvonne Rolle Sentenced in Ft. Pierce to over 12 Years in Prison for Smuggling Migrants by Sea as Hurricane Approached
Miami, FL (STL.News) Yesterday, a federal judge in Ft. Pierce sentenced a Bahamian man to 151 months in prison for trying to smuggle migrants into the United States on a poorly-equipped and overloaded boat while the area was under a hurricane warning.
According to court documents, on the night of July 30, 2020,
Yvonne Rolle, 29, of Coopers Town, Bahamas, attempted to pilot a vessel from Freeport, Bahamas, to the St. Lucie Inlet, with twelve migrants on board. At the time, the area was under a hurricane warning due to the approaching storm, Isaias. The vessel, which was overloaded and not equipped with food, water, or life jackets, broke down prior to arriving in Florida. It drifted until a boater discovered it the next day. Havana, Mar 12 (Prensa Latina) Cuba will continue working on preventing irregular, unsafe and disorderly migration as well as events that endanger human life, the country´s Foreign Ministry reported.
Cuba´s Foreign Ministry also urged the United States to take all measures to avoid these tragic events and reaffirms its commitment to the Joint Declaration on immigration matters, signed on January 12, 2017.
Cuba rigorously fulfills its obligations under said agreement, and bravely fights acts of violence and migration crimes such as human and illegal migrant trafficking.
