Campbell Law alumnus, LL M student installed on N C Court of Appeals | News

January 18, 2021 Campbell Law alumnus Judge Jeffery K. Carpenter ’03 and current LL.M. student Judge April C. Wood were among the five judges  formally installed in a virtual ceremony in the courtroom of the North Carolina Court of Appeals on Jan. 14, 2021.  Chief Judge Donna Stroud ’88 administered the oath of office. The swearing-in ceremony was virtual due to COVID-19 precautions. Guests, media, and the public attended the ceremony virtually via Livestream that can be watched at this link. Carpenter joined the Court of Appeals after serving as a superior court judge. He grew up just outside of the town of Morven in Anson County, North Carolina, where he attended and graduated from Anson County Public Schools. Carpenter attended Wingate University before transferring to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where he earned a bachelor of arts in political science. Hunter was sentenced to 11 months in prison on Tuesday for misusing campaign funds on personal expenses including vacations, video games for his son, private school tuition for his kids, and even an airline ticket for his pet rabbit. Prosecutors had asked U.S. District Court Judge Thomas J. Whelan to sentence Hunter to 14 months in prison, and Hunter’s defense lawyers asked for home confinement. Both Hunter and his wife, Margaret, were each charged in a 60-count indictment for misusing more than $250,000 in campaign contributions and purposely falsifying financial disclosure records to hide the unlawful personal expenses, sometimes listing them as contributions to wounded warriors.

Marine Corps books all 966 rooms at Hyatt Regency in downtown Jacksonville, sources say Published:  Updated:  Tags:  JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – One of Jacksonville’s largest downtown riverfront hotels is booked solid for at least the next five months. News4Jax first learned about the entire Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront hotel being booked from athletes who had reservations there for the Gate River Run in March. They said they were told they were being relocated to another hotel because one group rented out the entire property. News4Jax has confirmed from multiple sources that the group is the United States Marines Corps. On Tuesday, recruits could be seen being dropped off with backpacks and being escorted into the 966-room hotel, where News4Jax has learned they will stay for at least 14 days.
