When the pandemic started shutting everything down in March 2020, Kayla Gomez, a youth amateur boxer, scrambled to figure out how to continue training. Gomez, a seventeen-year-old from El Paso who competes in the 112-pound flyweight division, was fortunate to be from a boxing family. She’s trained by her mother, who has a deep amateur boxing career of her own, as well as her grandmother, who coaches them both. So, when COVID-19 upended their plans, Gomez and her family adapted. Her mother built a ring in their backyard, set up a gym in the garage that included weights, punching bags, and an agility course, and they got to work.
In baseball, a batting average of .200 even .250 won’t win a lot of games.
But in another hitting sport, 10 New Mexico amateur boxers traveled to Shreveport, Louisiana, for last week’s USA Boxing National Championships. Two of them won titles; another made the finals.
Percentage-wise, that’s a pretty good haul.
Saturday night, Las Cruces’ Ariana Carrasco overwhelmed Texan Ruby Navarro in winning the women’s Youth Division (ages 17-18) 141-pound title. The bout was stopped in the second round, giving Carrasco the victory by RSC (referee stopped contest).

On Tuesday, Las Cruces’ Joscelyn Olayo-Muñoz defeated Californian Mia Garcia by split (4-1) decision for the women’s Intermediate (13-14) 95-pound title.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. In Shreveport, Louisiana, Albuquerque amateur boxer Sharahya-Taina Moreu’s relentless body attack propelled her to a victory by split (3-2) decision on Friday over North Carolinian Stephanie Simon at the USA Boxing National Championships.
She’ll face Boston’s Arika Scoog on Saturday for the Elite Division title in the 152-pound weight class.
Moreu joins Las Cruces’ Ariana Carrasco as a finalist.
Carrasco advanced to the championship bout in the 141-pound Youth Division without having fought. With only three boxers entered in her weight class, Carrasco, the No. 1 seed, drew a bye and will face Ruby Navarro of Mission, Texas, for the title.
