Allisha Gray,
Tiffany Mitchell and
A’ja Wilson are part of the 19 athletes set to participate in a USA Basketball Women’s National Team minicamp, Feb. 4-7, at the University of South Carolina. Gamecock head coach
Dawn Staley, who is also the current National Team head coach, will lead the four-day minicamp.
“It’s been a year since we’ve been together for a training camp, and I’m excited to step back on the court with the USA National Team,” Staley said. “We’ve got a great mix of veteran leadership and younger players, most of whom know how I run practices, and I anticipate we’ll have four extremely competitive days of practice here in South Carolina. We’re missing a few pieces of the puzzle, we have 36 players in our pool, but it will be incredibly helpful in our preparations for the Olympics in Tokyo this summer.”
Nineteen Athletes Set to Return to Court for Feb. 4-7 USA Basketball Women’s National Team Minicamp
Date:
A total of 19 athletes, including Olympic and/or FIBA World Cup gold medalists
Sylvia Fowles (Minnesota Lynx),
Kelsey Plum (Las Vegas Aces),
Breanna Stewart (Seattle Storm) and
A’ja Wilson (Las Vegas Aces) will participate in training alongside fellow USA National Team members
Ariel Atkins (Washington Mystics),
Kelsey Mitchell (Indiana Fever),
Sydney Wiese (Los Angeles Sparks).
Additionally,
Kahleah Copper (Chicago Sky), who started all 22 games for the Sky in 2020 and averaged a team second-best 14.8 points and third-best 5.5 rebounds per game, has accepted an invitation to participate in the training camp in hopes of being named to the USA National Team pool in the future.
Wizards have endured a number of postponement due to COVID-19 protocols and
Bradley Beal wouldn’t mind if the league considered another bubble or regional sites as the season progresses, according to NBC Sports Washington’s Chase Hughes. Beal didn’t play in the summer restart in Orlando. “I probably wouldn’t be totally against it as long as we had the same success that we did the first go-around,” he said.
“I wasn’t part of the bubble in the first go-around, so I don’t necessarily know how all that worked down there every day. But I know going through it every day here, it’s a lot. We test twice a day at least for the last week. That’s very overwhelming at times.”
