This Is the Jan 6 Bill Senate Republicans Refused to Pass

The U.S. Senate on Friday failed to create a national bipartisan commission to study the Jan. 6 siege on the U.S. Capitol by documented supporters of former president Donald Trump. A bill to create such a commission, sponsored by Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) and co-sponsored by Rep. John Katko (R-N.Y.), sailed through the House of Representatives before stalling in the Senate. The requisite 60 votes necessary in the Senate failed to materialize when the time for a vote came on Friday morning.

Republicans Block January 6th Commission in First Filibuster Victory of Biden Presidency

Even with a handful of Republican senators joining Democrats on the 54 to 35 vote, their support wasn t enough. The Democrats and their Republican accomplices went for broke and lost handing the GOP minority its first filibuster victory of the Biden presidency. Senate GOP whip says there aren t 60 votes to advance Jan 6 commission bill today

2 hr 12 min ago Senate GOP whip says there aren t 60 votes to advance Jan. 6 commission bill today From CNN s Manu Raju and Ted Barrett Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images Senate Minority Whip John Thune told CNN that Republicans have the votes to filibuster the Jan. 6 commission bill when it comes up for a procedural vote later today. He plans to vote to block the measure. Asked if there would be 10 Republicans who might break ranks, Thune said, I don t believe there will be in its current form in the House-passed version. I think there are some issues with the commission, some flaws in the way it s designed that it s going to make it hard to get 10 Republicans to vote for it, he added.
