Opinion | America Needs a Jan 6 Commission

April 20, 2021, 5:00 a.m. ET Credit.Illustration by Eleni Agapis; photograph by Roberto Schmidt/Agence France-Presse Getty Images Barely 100 days have passed since American democracy came under direct attack on Jan. 6 a date that should live in infamy. But the Capitol riot is already in danger of being memory-holed. This cannot be allowed to happen. President Biden and Congress must not push it off any longer: As soon as possible, the American people need a thorough, unsparing and authoritative investigation that details exactly what happened and how on that horrific day, identifies the larger political and societal forces that encouraged it, and points the way toward a future in which such an attack is harder if not impossible to pull off.

AP News in Brief at 12:04 a.m. EDT by The Associated Press Last Updated Apr 20, 2021 at 12:14 am EDT Out of sight but centre stage, jurors weigh Chauvin’s fate MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The jurors who sat quietly off-camera through three weeks of draining testimony in Derek Chauvin’s murder trial in George Floyd’s death moved into the spotlight Tuesday, still out of sight but now in control of verdicts awaited by a skittish city. The jury of six white people and six people who are Black or multiracial was set for its first full of deliberations. The jury, anonymous by order of the judge and sequestered now until they reach a verdict, spent just a few hours on their task Monday after the day was mostly consumed by closing arguments in which prosecutors argued that Chauvin squeezed the life out of Floyd last May in a way that even a child knew was wrong.

Medical Examiner Rules Natural Causes Triggered Brian Sicknick s Death

A medical examiner s office concluded that natural causes triggered the death of Brian Sicknick, one of the victims of the Capitol Insurrection that happened on January 6, 2021. The ruling was made by the medical examiner s office from Washington, D.C. on Monday, Associated Press reported. Officer Brian Sicknick is one of the law enforcement officers who defended the Capitol when the rioters stormed inside the building while Congress is voting to certify President Joe Biden s electoral winning. Although the cause of Sicknick s death was not determined until Monday, investigators initially theorized that the cop s cause of death was when he was hit with a fire extinguisher in the head.
