Fifty years ago this week, Alan Shepard famously hit two golf balls on the Moon.
The first he shanked into a crater. The second he claimed to have smashed miles and miles and miles .
Now, while all golfers are prone to hyperbole, Shepard, who was commander of Nasa s Apollo 14 mission, could well have hit his ball that far on 6 February 1971 - despite only using a makeshift six iron that he had fashioned out of a collapsible tool designed to scoop lunar rock samples, and which he had sneaked aboard in a sock.

Bryson DeChambeau has welcomed a proposed rule change that would prevent him using a longer driver in his quest for more distance at the Masters.
The US Open champion is flattered that he is being associated with the move to reduce the maximum length of golf clubs from 48 to 46 inches. I think I might be pushing them a bit, said the world number eight. I m going to do what that they say is legal and find the best way to play for me under the rules of golf.
At his press conference on Wednesday ahead of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Rory McIlroy was ready to answer a question that no one asked him.
It was on Tuesday’s report released by the United States Golf Association and the R&A proposing changes to the rules regarding the distance the golf ball is traveling and, as he is wont to do when he is passionate about a subject, McIlroy didn’t hold back. I think the authorities, the R&A and USGA, are looking at the game through such a tiny little lens that what they re trying to do is change something that pertains to 0.1 per cent of the golfing community, he stated. Ninety-nine point-nine per cent of the people who play this game play for enjoyment, for entertainment. They don t need to be told what ball or clubs to use.
