U.S. task force lowers screening age for colorectal cancer to 45 Updated May 18, 2021; Facebook Share STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. The United States Preventative Services Task Force on Tuesday lowered its recommended age to begin screening for colorectal cancer from 50 to 45 years old. Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., and Black adults are disproportionately affected by it compared to other races and ethnicities and are more likely to die from the disease. The task force, considered the leading panel for medical guidance in the country, initially issued a draft letter in October signaling the shift in screening age. The final recommendation statement was published Tuesday in the journal JAMA and is now in line with the American Cancer Society’s colorectal screening recommendations, which shifted to 45 years old in 2018.
