Annie Dyson scored four goals to help Virginia to a 19-13 victory over Connecticut in the opening round of the NCAA women s lacrosse tournament.
Connecticut was somewhat surprised to find out that it had earned an at-large bid to the NCAA women’s lacrosse tournament after losing in the Big East championship game last weekend. For most of the evening against Virginia, the Huskies proved that it very much belonged. UConn trailed just 11-10 into the second half, but the Cavaliers ultimately pulled away for a 19-13 victory.
UConn had leads of 3-2 and 4-3 in the first half and got back within 11-10 on Stephanie Palmucci’s goal with 24:20 left in the game, but then the Cavaliers turned it on. Seven different Virginia players scored goals during a seven-goal run, including this highlight-reel goal from Morgan Schwab.

The NCAA men’s lacrosse tournaments 49 of them in all, spread over 50 years have produced memorable champions, riveting individual performances and on a whole have played a massive role in growing the sport to the point it is one of the few championships to regularly turn a profit.
Yet for every victory lap and net snipped on Memorial Day, there is even more disappointment. In some cases, there is just stunned silence.

NEW NAME UNIFIES BROAD INITIATIVES UNDER ONE UMBRELLA
The name has changed. The logo has changed. But the mission to provide national leadership, structure and resources to fuel the sport’s growth and enrich the experience of participants remains the same.
In 1998, eight national lacrosse organizations merged to form US Lacrosse with a goal to funnel more resources into the development of the sport. Today, after more than $275 million has been invested in the sport over the last two decades, the evolution continues with the unveiling of USA Lacrosse. We aim to unify the activities of the organization into one fully-aligned brand. Our pursuit to elevate the sport at the elite level and our promise to support our youngest players’ dreams are harmonious.
