Taipei, March 17 (CNA) Shares in Taiwan moved lower Wednesday as tech heavyweights, in particular in the semiconductor sector, came under downward pressure, led by contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), dealers said.
Concerns over the market s future movement have been on the rise as market sentiment has been hurt in the wake of a large number of short-position futures contracts held by foreign institutional investors, indicating more selling in the spot market, the dealers said.
The Taiex, the weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), ended down 97.34 points, or 0.6 percent, at 16,215.82, after moving between 16,166.35 and 16,349.21. Turnover totaled NT$311.2 billion (US$10.99 billion).

Taipei, March 16 (CNA) Shares in Taiwan moved higher Tuesday to close above the 16,300-point mark as investors were encouraged by a rally on U.S. markets overnight, dealers said.
The upturn was capped by lingering concerns over a possible technical pullback for large cap tech stocks, which had relatively high valuations, while old economy stocks, particularly in the tourism and construction sectors, attracted rotational buying throughout the session, the dealers said.
The Taiex, the weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), ended up 63.83 points, or 0.39 percent, at 16,313.16, after moving between 16,244.99 and 16,340.66. Turnover totaled NT$295.95 billion (US$10.48 billion).

Taipei, March 12 (CNA) Shares in Taiwan extended their momentum from a session earlier to close above the 16,200-point mark Friday following a rally on American markets, dealers said.
The gains were capped by the end of the session, however, as some investors decided to pocket their gains, especially in large cap tech stocks amid lingering concerns over U.S. Treasury yields, they said.
The Taiex, the Taiwan Stock Exchange s main weighted index, ended up 75.62 points, or 0.47 percent, at 16,255.18, after moving between 16,166.35 and 16,298.03. Turnover was NT$297.96 billion (US$10.59 billion).
