Erin Osterberg, an assistant professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of the Fraser Valley, focuses her research on police response to gang violence. She said the key to ending gang violence in the region is cracking down on importation of drugs.  In the late 90s, all the funding for ports police was decimated, and so at our major seaports, we don t have a police presence, she told On the Coast host Gloria Macarenko.  That s really problematic as far as the ability to import commercial quantities of the drugs that are essentially fuelling all of this violence.

First-degree murder charge laid in weekend shooting of Burnaby teen

May102021, 11:31 am A 20-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder following a Saturday evening shooting in Burnaby. At a press conference on May 10, Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) officers announced that Ahmed Tahir has been charged in relation to the death of Toni Dalipi, 19. Dalipi was gunned down just after 7 pm on May 8 as he left a business in the 7700 block of 6 Avenue. He was shot “multiple times,” and later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Dave Chauhan, IHIT Officer in Charge, revealed that an innocent bystander had also been shot during the incident. The individual was “in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Chauhan said. Their injuries are described as non-life threatening, and they are expected to recover.

The widow of a Surrey man gunned down in a case of mistaken identity is asking why police aren t doing more to crack down on violent gangsters. It comes amid a spike in targeted, gang-related shootings and killings across the region, many of them in crowded public places. Darlene Bennett s husband Paul, a popular hockey coach and nurse, was shot dead in front of their family home in 2018. As the third anniversary of his murder approaches, she says she fears other families will face the same torment hers has.
