Conference to guide African seed sector transformation for food system outcomes
Wageningen University & Research works with international partners to guide seed sector transformation in Africa. With the UN Food Systems Summit and other important global gatherings upcoming, 2021 is an opportune moment for collaborative sharing and learning.
The online conference will bring together researchers, practitioners, companies and policy-makers to discuss, test, debate and challenge the latest insights and innovations, as well as try to identify opportunities to overcome remaining persistent bottlenecks. Given the COVID-19 situation around the world, a critical challenge for seed sectors in its own right, the entire conference will be online, organised as a programme of interactive ‘drop-in and drop-out’ webinars.

February 19, 2021– On February 17, IFDC launched its ISSD/Sahel project for Mali and Niger. The project was initiated with a kickoff ceremony, which took place in Niger and virtually. The ceremony featured attendees from 12 countries. The meeting was held in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Niger (MAG/EL) and featured addresses from H.E. Paul Tholen, Dutch Ambassador to Niger, and Mr. Mahamane Elhadji Ousmane, Director of Cabinet at MAG/EL. IFDC Regional Director for North and West Africa Oumou Camara presented a welcome to attendees, and Tom Van Mourik from the KIT Royal Tropical Institute introduced the project and the members of the consortium. Integrated Seed Sector Development in the Sahel (ISSD/Sahel)
The Integrated Seed Sector Development in the Sahel (ISSD/Sahel) is a four-year project (2020-2024) in Mali and Niger funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
ISSD/Sahel seeks to increase rural incomes, improve rural employment, and ensure the food and nutrition security of households in Mali and Niger.
The project will accomplish these goals by establishing a vibrant, dynamic, and pluralistic seed system that accounts for the coexistence of formal and informal seed systems in the supply of smallholder farmers in target areas. The project will ensure the availability and use of quality seeds through the establishment of a commercially viable and self-sustaining seed sector, supported by customer-oriented seed services.
