Government of Canada and Cement Association of Canada announce partnership to advance global leadership in low-carbon concrete production

Science, research and innovation are playing a key role in Canada's move toward a cleaner and stronger economy and in our fight against climate change. Working with industry—including the cement and concrete sector—is critical to creating economic opportunities for Canadians, growing our leadership in clean technologies and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.

Whitest paint assists progress to cooler climate

Whitest paint assists progress to cooler climate 20 Apr 2021 Purdue University project could optimize radiant cooling from films and paints. Cool world: radiative cooling Anything that can reduce the amount of energy required to keep the world s buildings and interior spaces cool is potentially a valuable contribution to efforts at combating global warming. A team at Purdue University has now developed what it believes to be the whitest paint yet formulated, offering a route to achieving passive daytime radiative cooling from structures coated with the paint. As reported in Applied Materials & Interfaces, the work builds on and surpasses the team s previous work on how white and reflective a paint could be.

Compact, exceptional beam roundness (>93%) and reproducible beam characteristics Configured for OEMs, the dart, 8 picosecond laser is ideal for micromachining

Product Announcement Compact, exceptional beam roundness (>93%) and reproducible beam characteristics. Configured for OEMs, the dart, 8 picosecond laser is ideal for micromachining 14 Apr 2021 Drawing on a wealth of technical and application experience from our ARGES and Laser Quantum engineering teams, we have developed Dart, a picosecond laser solution with reliable, repeatable operation to ensure precision in a multitude of applications. Dart offers a leading design for a range of precision processing and microelectronic applications with multiple power levels, wavelengths, and pulse parameters available. Each laser delivers excellent beam quality with the M 2 close to the diffraction limit and near-perfect beam roundness (>93% typically across 2 Rayleigh lengths) ensuring clean material processing.

Silicon photonics moves into new clinical and environmental applications

Silicon photonics moves into new clinical and environmental applications 14 Apr 2021 MISSION project developing next-generation integrated photonics devices. Graham Reed: progress towards better lives around the world. A new project coordinated by the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton aims to extend silicon photonics devices into new applications. Backed by £5.8 million from the UK s EPSRC funding agency, the five-year program intends to unleash the full potential of integrated mid-infrared photonics, according to the project. MISSION, named for Mid-Infrared Silicon Photonic Sensors for Healthcare and Environmental Monitoring, also includes as partners the universities of York and Sheffield, as well as the Southampton-based National Oceanographic Centre (NOC).
