Native American painter Brent Learned merges his tribal culture with Pop art sensibilities

A self-proclaimed mama s boy, Brent Learned was entering his senior year at the University of Kansas when he asked his mother what he could do to make her proud. She goes, Well, son, I m already proud of you, but if you re asking to make me more proud, I would really appreciate it if you would paint your culture, said Learned, a member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. So, I started doing Native American paintings, and then from there, I kind of discovered other Native American artists. . The way I look at it is I m telling my ancestors story . and I feel like I m keeping their voice alive through my art.

This weekend, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art will host its 37th annual Omelette Party – in the form of an art raffle online – as we note the one-year anniversary since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 an actual worldwide pandemic.
It obviously has been a tough year on everyone, including our nonprofit, cultural and arts organizations that continue to figure out creative ways to connect with us at home and provide essential services. So even as we’re starting to feel the hope for normalcy to return with vaccinations, let’s keep enjoying these groups’ virtual options and supporting them at home.
