Albany, N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo admitted today that New York’s Covid-19 cluster zones are problematic, offering a speck of hope to restaurants in Syracuse that have been begging him to allow indoor dining in the city again.
Since November, most of Syracuse and portions of some close suburbs have been locked in one of the state’s coronavirus orange zones, which bans indoor dining at restaurants. Eateries say they are struggling and have asked Cuomo to switch the zone to yellow.
Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh and Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon support the request and Walsh sent a letter to Cuomo this week asking for the change.

DINING OUT RESTAURANT REVIEW: Mad Tacos is not an attempt at authentic Mexican food. Owner Jonathan Phillips serves what he calls East Coast tacos – including, from left, a black bean taco, beer-battered cod taco and pulled pork taco. They mirror the Americanized West Coast taco consumed in beach areas along the Southern California coast. Located in the Madison County town of Nelson, about five minutes east of Cazenovia, the converted house has an extremely casual vibe, is it worth a visit? Read our review. (Jared Paventi photo)

Now, the lights are off again at Danzer’s German & American Gasthof at 153 Ainsley Drive in Syracuse. It’s been closed since late November, just after Gov. Andrew Cuomo placed the city and some of its suburbs into an orange zone. Cuomo used rising Covid-19 cases to justify his order that restaurants in those areas shut down for indoor dining.
