Dr. Adam Effler Special to The Citizen The saying that “a trained eye can find a needle in a haystack” describes well one’s ability to understand natural surroundings and observe changing conditions. Through education and careful analysis, one may identify and diagnose improving and degrading conditions in watersheds and landscapes. Wilted tree leaves and brown lawns, for example, are natural signs of plant distress and drought conditions that many have learned to easily recognize over time. Natural ecosystems are constantly providing us familiar and unfamiliar clues about the health of the landscape through subtle signs and signals. However, there is often a variety of overlooked patterns we may not recognize at first, but through observation and analysis of symptoms, revelations of dynamic environmental health conditions can emerge.

Environmental groups work with farmer on filtration project in Fleming

FLEMING — Farmers and environmental group worked together on an environmental conservation effort in Fleming Saturday. Around 20 people, including those with the Owasco Lake Watershed Management Council and the Owasco Watershed Lake Association, trudged through thick soil and mud that morning to plant willow canes along 1,400 feet between Veness Brook and farmer Todd DuMond's crop field. DuMond, some of his family members and members of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 21 from Owasco were also putting in the willow canes, which are meant to eventually become willow trees. Dr. Dana Hall, the event's organizer and president of OWLA's board of directors, said before the event that people there would be adding the canes and distributing grass seeds, which together will create a filtration buffer that will filter out the soil, dirt and the material inside the dirt from the field and from upstream before it can reach Owasco Lake.

While much has been accomplished, much more is needed.  While this statement may apply to certain aspects of our lives, let's focus on the efforts and challenges to improve the water quality of Owasco Lake — our area's source of drinking water and several recreational activities. To narrow the focus further, what is being done to reduce the sediments and nutrients flowing into our lake and all of our neighboring Finger Lakes? Why reduce these anyway? Well, we need to minimize the occurrence of the not-so-friendly, green and slimy harmful algal blooms, with their dangerous toxins, that occur periodically from about July through October. We should not enter the water when these HABs are present. No swimming by humans or their pets!
