Ohio County Reports 86th COVID-19 Death | News, Sports, Jobs

From Staff Reports The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department reported a new COVID-19-related death for the second straight night Thursday. That brought the county’s total to 86 related deaths since the pandemic began. The department also announced 13 new positive COVID cases in its Thursday night update, bringing that total to 4,313. WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital will cut back on the hours of its off-site COVID testing center starting Monday. From that point, the center’s hours will be 9 a.m.-noon, Monday through Friday. This Saturday will be the last Saturday the center is open for testing. The drive-through center is located at the former Harmony House, next to Valley Professional Center South at the old OVMC. To reach the site, those being tested will drive up 22nd Street to behind the old Valley Professional Center South, turn left at the top of the hill and follow the signs.

That marked the 85th such death in the county since the pandemic began. The department also announced eight new positive COVID cases in the county as of Wednesday night, pushing that total to 4,300. Two of those cases are what is commonly known as the UK Variant of the virus. There have been 30 cases of the UK Variant, a more communicable version of the virus, found in Ohio County as of Wednesday.

Northern Panhandle in Safest Categories on COVID-19 Map | News, Sports, Jobs

From STAFF REPORTS The Northern Panhandle’s four counties found themselves Sunday in the safest categories on the Department of Health and Human Resources COVID-19 alert map. Hancock, Brooke and Ohio counties all were green, the safest category on the five-color-coded map. Marshall County was yellow, the next-safest category. Hancock County had an infection rate of 8.43 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 1.84. Brooke County had an infection rate of 10.42 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 2.04. Ohio County had an infection rate of 15.87 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 2.26. Marshall County had an infection rate of 21.52 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 3.96.
