Special to The Times One of the leading health care needs in the state of Ohio is one that’s most neglected, especially when it comes to low-income communities. As dental director at the Cincinnati Health Department and as part of the CincySmiles dental clinic program, Dr. Larry Hill’s major task was making sure low-income and high risk populations had access to oral health services, something he says isn’t enough of a priority in the state. “It’s been a decades long battle to try to do something about this,” Hill said. “Oral health is…connected to everything else (in health), but it’s been forgotten in most state and national health policy.”

Health commissioner Joe Ebel has wealth of public health experience

LANCASTER - So much for retirement. New Fairfield County Health Commissioner Joe Ebel retired in June from the same post in Licking County after 20 years. Advocates For Dental Health Have Ideas For How To Make It More Accessible To Underserved Communities

Sebastian Duda, Shutterstock.com A coalition of groups working to expand dental access for unserved or underserved Ohioans says there are cost-effective and common-sense ways to do it. Listen / Janis Sunderhaus, CEO of Health Partners of Western Ohio, says too many Ohioans lack good dental care. For example, she says there is not one dentist in Defiance County who will take a Medicaid patient. She says the only way to really provide oral care for unserved or underserved patients is to allow more options for service. Carla Hicks with the Ohio Public Health Association says advanced practice registered nurses are integral parts of health care. She says dental therapists could and should be given the opportunity to work with dentists to serve people who lack good dental care.
