Arctic conditions in U S show climate change is here

By AARON HOFFMAN and MARK REYNOLDS Sometimes it seems like some won’t support climate action until hell — or Texas — freezes over. Well, after recent events, the climate threat is clear as can be, and it’s time for Congress to act. On Feb. 13, a winter storm began sweeping across the U.S. Within days, the frigid conditions and ensuing infrastructure challenges led to dozens of deaths, massive power outages, and millions without clean water. Texas came within minutes of catastrophic failures that would have caused months-long blackouts. Here in the Grand Valley, we were relatively unaffected by the polar vortex. However, we are strongly affected by other disruptions in climate that have “earned” Western Colorado the title of “climate change hot spot,” because we’ve already exceeded the 2-degree average temperature rise that the rest of the globe is trying to avoid. Downtown Mainstreet sets inaugural Love Fest events February 1, 2021 6:05 PM Site staff LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) Downtown Mainstreet will sponsor its inaugural Love Fest from Feb. 8-14, with events including skating and girls hockey demonstrations and a Fat Tire Bike Race, among other activities, as well as shopping and dining experiences. The new festival, which will begin at 10 a.m. Feb. 8, is a family-friendly celebration. Downtown Mainstreet has partnered with the free app, Sabadash, which enables downtown businesses to participate in the convenience of online shopping. (WKBT) The Outdoor Recreation Alliance is ramping up its planning for a new hiking trail to get there the top of Miller Bluff from here, the lower Hixon Forest parking lot. Participants in a virtual meeting on the topic that the city’s La Crosse Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department sponsored Wednesday evening were enthusiastic about the hiking trail on city-owned property. Most of their interactions with ORA executive director Jed Olson focused on clarifications about what the trail might include.
