Sparta to celebrate annual opening of Elroy-Sparta State Bike Trail April 21, 2021 3:14 PM Jourdan Vian SPARTA, Wis. (WKBT) Sparta will celebrate the start of biking season May 1 as the three tunnels of the Elroy-Sparta Trail reopen for the year. The Sparta Area Chamber of Commerce, located at 111 Milwaukee St., will host a variety of activities throughout the day, beginning with an 8 a.m. pancake breakfast that serves as a fundraiser for the Sparta Ambassadors. “Being  America’s Bicycling Capital, we wanted to bring a new twist to an already established event.  We are excited to be starting something that hopefully will last for years to come.  We have quite a day planned that you don’t want to miss-from food to vendors, to a BMX stunt show-and of course, Ben Bikin’,”   said Heidi Prestwood, Executive Director of the Sparta Area Chamber of Commerce.

About that ice rink

By JIM SPEHAR In a couple of days, we’ll have a good idea of the direction Grand Junction will be taking for at least the next few years. Deadline for City Council ballots to be returned is 7 p.m. Tuesday. Election results will follow shortly thereafter. It’s been an interesting election season featuring puzzling non-participation in most public forums by four of the eight candidates, a dustup over public lands and recreation questions posed by the Outdoor Recreation Coalition, and outright opposition to city efforts to foster private-sector development on Grand Junction’s riverfront. Not to mention the two related measures which would finally allow marijuana sales in the city and another non-controversial measure which would clear the way for a trail section along the river.

Council candidates miffed by public lands discourse

Several City Council candidates voiced displeasure with a local organization of outdoor recreation leaders after it published responses to a questionnaire that did not include all the candidates. In Sunday’s edition of The Daily Sentinel, a letter to the editor from Outdoor Recreation Coalition (ORC) member Sarah Shrader pointed readers to the ORC website, which published candidate responses to a questionnaire on public lands and recreation issues. The questionnaire itself was not part of The Daily Sentinel’s news coverage of the race, but an independent effort by the ORC. Following the publication of the letter, candidates Jody Green, Greg Haitz and Mark McCallister said they did not receive the questionnaire from the coalition.

ORA, La Crosse parks and rec warn of weather-related trail closures

ORA, La Crosse parks and rec warn of weather-related trail closures March 1, 2021 10:08 AM Jourdan Vian LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) The Outdoor Recreation Alliance and the La Crosse Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department sent out a reminder Monday that trails will be fragile and periodically closed throughout spring’s freeze/thaw cycle. As the weather warms up, trail users need to be careful of mud and stay off trails where they start to sink to avoid damaging the trail. During the freeze/thaw cycle, the ground freezes at night and thaws during the day, leaving a wet and slushy trail. When trail users start to leave tracks, they can cause problems that will force the trails to be closed for weeks for repairs.
