New Indiana Secretary Of State Readying For 2022 Election With County Clerk Input

Credit Courtesy of the Governor s Office Though Indiana doesn’t have a statewide election this fall, the new Secretary of State – appointed in March – is preparing for 2022’s midterm contest by meeting with all the state’s county clerks, and she wants to continue to make it simple for Indiana to vote on Indiana’s own terms. “I no longer call it ‘voting day.’ We now have ‘voting season’ in Indiana, where we have at least 28 days for voters to have the opportunity to vote in their counties.” It’s that in-person voting access that Secretary of State Holli Sullivan is trying to expand before next year. She wants to increase the number of counties using vote centers.

Sullivan was named secretary of state by Gov. Eric Holcomb last month, replacing Connie Lawson, who retired. Sullivan was asked at the time whether she’d run for a new term after the current one expires. She demurred, saying she was focused on transitioning to the new role. In a statement, the former lawmaker says she’s running for the job to bring her conservative record to defending Indiana’s elections. Sullivan was criticized last month after her appointment when she refused to say the national 2020 presidential election was legitimate.

Credit Courtesy of the Governor s Office The state of Indiana’s economic development arm has a new, temporary leader after Secretary of Commerce Jim Schellinger abruptly stepped down last week. Gov. Eric Holcomb Monday named Jim Staton the interim Secretary of Commerce, heading up the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. The IEDC is responsible for helping get companies to locate and add more jobs in the state. Staton has worked for the agency for more than 15 years. Most recently, he was its senior vice president and chief business development officer, in charge of overseeing both domestic and international expansion and attraction efforts.
