With a big smile on his face and Tampa Bay shining in the Monday-morning sun, Gov. Ron DeSantis ended the public-health state of emergency caused by the coronavirus. Just like that, every Florida town, city and county was back to business as usual. Have a great day, y’all!
Granted, there were other backdrops the governor could have chosen, such as the Intensive Care Unit at Fish Memorial Medical Center in Orange City. It would have been a lively sight, since every bed is full. Or a COVID-19 testing center, where one in every 16 or so tests is coming back positive.

It’s official: Florida gets one more seat in Congress and gains a vote in the Electoral College, following the release of official U.S. Census tallies showing the Sunshine State’s official population at 21,538,187.
If you said, “That’s good,” well, you’re not wrong. The extra representation will be beneficial. The state can use all the clout it can muster, because it needs all the federal help it can get.
But if you said, “Wait. I thought that was supposed to be two seats,” you’ve clearly been paying attention. Florida was projected to easily hurdle the 22 million mark, which would have allowed it to claim at least one more House seat and electoral vote. The same thing happened in Texas and Arizona.
