Vaccine appointments were available at Senior Coastsiders

Vaccine appointments available today at Senior Coastsiders

Updated March 5: Appointments were available to get a COVID-19 vaccination on Thursday, March 4, at Senior Coastsiders for any San Mateo County residents 65 or older or those with canceled Sutter Health appointments. This is not an opportunity for those under 65 or who don t otherwise qualify by county guidelines. Senior Coastsiders Executive Director Sandra Winter said 200 Moderna doses were ready to go into arms, but just around 35 people have signed up early in the day. The walk-up site is for any county resident 65 or older who is in need of their first vaccine, and will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at 925 Main Street in Half Moon Bay.

Local groups give shot in arm to vaccine rollout

If last week’s vaccine rollout to seniors — where phone lines were tied up for hours and online portals crashed — is any indication, getting enough county residents access to the vaccine will be no small feat.  Health leaders at San Mateo County say they must vaccinate 90 percent of the adult population, or around 557,000 people, to achieve herd immunity locally. But even when supply catches up to demand and doses become widely available, many barriers stand in the way of getting enough shots into arms.  The location and timing of a site matters for working residents, language and technology can prevent signups, and so can fear, mistrust and misinformation. Shireen Malekafzali, county senior manager for Health Policy, Planning and Equity, said the hurdles are endless.
