Naval Air Station Jacksonville gets a new commander

By MATT SOERGEL | The Florida Times-Union | Published: April 9, 2021 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Tribune News Service) Capt. Jeffrey Hill took over command Friday of Naval Air Station Jacksonville, the third-largest Navy base in the country. The change of command ceremony, closed to the media, featured praise for outgoing Capt. Brian Weiss, commander since October 2019. Weiss guided the base through the COVID-19 pandemic and was commander in 2020 when it was named the Navy’s top naval air station for the third-straight year. Before that, Weiss was executive officer at the base and helped lead rescue efforts after a chartered plane with 146 aboard skidded off the base s runway into the St. Johns River. All crew and passengers survived.

U S Navy Nurse Overcomes Life s Challenges, Helps Community > United States Navy > News-Stories

U.S Navy registered nurse and Georgia native, McDonald was one of the 139 Navy personnel deployed to Jacksonville, Florida, in early March to distribute and provide vaccines at the state-run, federally-supported Community Vaccination Center. To hear her life story is to understand why she joined the U.S. Navy and volunteered to help community members fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Early on in her life, McDonald met a nurse at the nursing home where her great grandmother lived. “I met this wonderful lady named Earnestine Anderson who treated my great grandmother with dignity and respect,” recalled McDonald. “I told my mother I wanted to grow up to be like Ms. Anderson.”
