Like so many of you, this Fourth of July, I will be celebrating with good music, great food, and friends and family by my side. But as a former Army field artillery officer, a West Point graduate and a home-bred Floridian, I cannot ignore the significance of this holiday.  The birth of our nation is rooted in a steadfast belief in the ability to guard and govern ourselves. However, in 2021 we continue to experience global security threats that have fundamentally altered how our military approaches guarding our national security.  I experienced a few intense hurricanes growing up in Florida but the need to evacuate north was rare. In recent years, however, these Waffle House closing, evacuation-worthy hurricanes have become more frequent. I now work to educate veterans on the need to prepare military bases for climate change, our most urgent national security threat.
