Engine cooling issue sidelines LCS Sioux City March 12 The littoral combat ship Sioux City has been sidelined for several months after an issue with the engine cooling system was discovered in January, officials confirmed this week. (Navy) The littoral combat ship Sioux City is laid up after air was found in the ship’s lube oil, which could affect engine cooling and raise the risk of overheating, Naval Surface Force Atlantic officials confirmed this week. The problem was discovered Jan. 12 during routine maintenance aboard the ship, which was commissioned less than three years ago in November 2018. Initially, the repairs were only expected to take a few days, but officials now say they don’t have a timeline for when Sioux City will once again be good to go.

A buildup of destroyers has begun at Naval Station Mayport as part of a set of homeport changes that are costing the base its amphibious vessels, Navy officials said.
The arrival last weekend of the USS Jason Dunham continues a cycle of ship reassignments that began in November when the amphibious transport dock ship USS New York left Mayport for Norfolk, Va.
Mayport’s amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima will relocate to Norfolk, too, but the date isn’t clear. The dock landing ship USS Fort McHenry, the station’s other amphibious vessel, was already scheduled to be retired by the end of March.

The Navy’s surface fleet has a new set of orders that updates a sleep policy to give sailors on watch rotations a bit more sleep and create a culture supporting a more ready, rested and focused seagoing force.
The “Comprehensive Crew Endurance Management Policy,” signed off Dec. 11 by Naval Surface Force Pacific and Naval Surface Force Atlantic, is the first update to the joint instruction issued just months after two 2017 fatal at-sea collisions rocked the Navy.

Cmdr. Frank Azzarello, commanding officer of guided-missile destroyer USS Forrest Sherman, was relieved just days ahead of a scheduled change-of-command ceremony.
The Navy says the removal was because of a loss of confidence in his ability to command, but Azzarello s lawyer says the service sacked the commander over his plan to turn a rusty AK-47 assault rifle into a plaque to celebrate an Arabian Sea weapons seizure.
