Wilmington woman sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for heroin, fentanyl trafficking

A Wilmington woman was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison Thursday for distribution of a substance containing heroin and fentanyl. Wilmington police found several bindles of heroin on Crystal Denise James during an August 2018 traffic stop. After locating several bindles in her front pocket, she pulled more out of her back pockets. The search yielded 57 bags of heroin and fentanyl.  According to a Department of Justice news release, “a total of 57 bags of a heroin and fentanyl mixture were seized.” Subsequently, during the spring of 2019, an informant with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office purchased a “mixture of heroin acetyl fentanyl and fentanyl” from James.
