Stone crab harvesting season ends two weeks earlier than usual

M.M. Cloutier It’s last call for a popular delicacy served at the island’s restaurants. Florida’s annual half-year harvesting season for stone crab claws ends May 1. That’s two weeks earlier than prior years in order to buttress Florida’s stone crab fishery, which has experienced a long-term decline in the annual harvest, according to the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission. Nearly every restaurant in town that serves seafood offers stone crab claws, one of Florida’s claims to gastronomic fame. The claws, typically served with a mustard sauce for dipping, come in various size classifications from small to colossal; jumbo, the second-largest size, is the most popular in Palm Beach.

The Breakers will show the Academy Awards ceremony on TVs in its onsite restaurants HMF and The Seafood Bar, as well as its offsite Sunrise

M.M. Cloutier Special to the Daily News Coinciding with the Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood on Sunday, The Breakers is rolling out the red carpet for an Oscar celebration with pandemic protocols. Three of the resort-hotel’s restaurants its onsite HMF and Seafood Bar and its offsite Echo on Sunrise Avenue will feature Oscar-themed cocktails and show the 8 p.m. Academy Awards ceremony on television. Oscar doings at The Breakers come as Café L’Europe is skipping the restaurant’s annual Oscar party this year, with plans to resume the fun next season. Because Café L’Europe’s Oscar celebration a 22-year tradition, complete with human-sized Oscar statuettes typically involves a crowded indoor party, “it just doesn’t make sense” during a pandemic, owner Jennifer Marcello said.

A record-breaking crowd bodes well for the Lakeland hospitality industry, which has struggled since the onset of the pandemic brought shutdowns and continued economic hardship. Manuel Meza, general manager for Harry s Seafood Bar & Grille downtown, is certainly looking forward to it.  I don t know how it s going to be this year in terms of how many people they have flying in, Meza said. But I would say there s a 15 to 20% increase in sales as opposed to if Sun n Fun wasn t in town on the same date range.   In addition to larger crowds, Meza said Sun n Fun also tends to bring in pretty wealthy people, which tends to have a positive effect on the restaurant s bottom line for the week.
